Here's how to Start the New Year with Joy and Happiness!

Every year for more than 35 years, I have made an annual practice at New Years, of writing down a list of all the wonderful blessings and magical experiences I have enjoyed over the previous year, and what I want to accomplish in the years ahead-- what’s still on my 'bucket list’
I write it all down in in my 'blessings journal'. Then I turn the pages back to previous years to reflect on the goals of my past
It feels so satisfying to check off what I have accomplished. Sometimes it takes many years to fulfill a goal. Some goals remain, even after many years
Sometimes what I want has changed and is no longer a dream of mine, or relevant. How many dreams have taken a different direction through Divine Intervention. It makes me feel excited and motivated and connected to my own destiny
I make a new list of my current goals (at this point in my life, it is more like a bucket list!). It’s always interesting to see the evolution
Then I think back on all the special moments and blessings of the past year. These are moments that have brought me joy and inspiration and that I choose to remember and hold close to my heart. They make me feel very blessed and happy. My heart feels full as I write them down, in different coloured inks, so they feel even more magical!
Some years I’ve had to think really hard to find the blessings. But, the little moments of joy are always there ….rescuing a dragonfly from a spider web and feeling awe as it darts around me in gratitude … a hummingbird hovering right in my face to say hello … my cat cuddling into my neck and quietly purring … my peonies starting to bloom …. A baby bunny nibbling on the clover I sowed in my lawn
As I write, I get to 're-live' the experiences all over again! It feels heart-warming and grateful to have so very many blessings. It is especially wonderful to look through previous years of blessings and remember all the wonderful experiences and cherished memories of a life well-lived
Gratitude and awe, recognizing a life well lived, is a good positive note on which to start the new year. Take moments out of your busy schedule to be fully present with these kinds of small blessed moments
This practice of starting my year in a positive, life-affirming way keeps me focused and aimed on happiness. Wishing you a quiet, peaceful, reflective new year!
